Disposition Authorities for Individual Classifications for Headquarters Case Files. Part B: Classification 175. Assaulting the President.

This classification, established September 27, 1965, contains cases involving threats or assaults on the President or Vice President, the President-elect and vice President-elect (beginning 1968), and members of congress and members of congress-elect (beginning 1972). The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigates actual assaults, killings, kidnappings and conspiracies, while the United States Secret Service has the basic jurisdiction over threats.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Each plant survey was a separate case file, with the survey, supplemental surveys, and all communications dealing with a plant insofar as plant protection was concerned, filed together.
